POPULATION: 37 Rise and shine, everyone! At 7:00 AM on the dot, those who are asleep will be roused from their slumber by the sound of a bugle call. It seems that breakfast is now served in the Mess Hall. How nice! It's up to you to decide if you want to continue sleeping or not... But maybe it's a good idea to grab a bite and explore your surroundings. After all, it seems the fog has receded enough to reveal a few new locations. Regardless of what you do, be sure to check the weather before stepping outside. You never know when you might need an umbrella! Once you're up and at them, though, there are a few points of interest this week. If you swing by the Director's Office, you will find Winter Wizard manning the receptionist's desk or flitting in and out of the rooms down the hallway. This week's tasks are now available, and you can check them out on the announcement board in the waiting room. Should you visit the Camp Shop, Black Shadows will be handling all transactions at the checkout counter. Even camp directors hold down normal jobs, you know. Strangely enough, Purple Heart doesn't seem to be stationed at any set location. Maybe it's their week off? Oh, well. Seems like if you want to get ahold of them, you'll have to pay your respects to the bunnies. As you explore the camp, however... You may find yourself confronted by scenes from a not so distant past. Or, perhaps, the so-called-movies playing on the big screen are completely foreign to you. But that's not all you will have to deal with this week. Continue skimming the edges of the forest, and you will find yourself going down memory lane. Literally. To further complicate matter, you will quickly discover that something about you has changed. At the start of the week, every single one of you will find yourselves aligned with one of four elements: fire, water, air or earth. Though your affiliation will not allow you to perform any outright elemental manipulation, you will find yourself reflecting your affiliation through one physical attribute. For example: A fire aligned may become hot to the touch, an earth aligned might discover their skin is now coarse like sandpaper, an air aligned might find their hair constantly flowing in an unfelt breeze, and a water aligned might be................. very sweaty. Whatever the case, this effect will fade away once Week 3 officially begins.

[He hums a little, watching Chuuya write out his Spirit Money for a second before he goes back to folding another bit of paper up.]

I wonder what spirits could even use money for. It's not like you actually have to pay to get ferried across a river or anything! Hah - superstitions are something else.

If the spirits exist on that other side, then I'm sure they'll eventually find a need for an economy. Even if they don't need to eat or anything, there's still jobs over there, right? Someone could pay someone else to do shitty jobs. Or maybe I'm just talking shit, I dunno. I've never been religious.

[That's sure not what he experienced when he was dead, but he's also hoping his experience was, like. An outlier. Because it'd be pretty bleak if it wasn't, haha!]

You could be right, though! Maybe the paper money we burn gets over there and becomes their only form of currency. The better-liked someone is in their lifetime, the wealthier they get to be on the other side, hm?

[Chuuya is pretty sure he's not going to an afterlife- murdergame nonsense notwithstanding- so he doesn't really have it in him to care what the afterlife is like.]

Well that's stupid. Some of the best people keep to themselves. Shouldn't it be based on what a person is like, not how famous they are?

[That just has him laughing, his shoulders rising in a lazy shrug.]

Who's to say the afterlife is any more fair than the one we live here and now?

I guess that's true. If life isn't fair, then death probably isn't either.

[He's burning that yen note he made.]

I wonder how gods fit in to all of it too.

[It's nihilism o'clock in this corner of camp, damn.]

Mmm... Maybe they're just as miserable? Like bosses with big titles who can't actually do much with them!

Well if they're gods, they should just change it then. Gods have the power, right?

Maybe they don't! Maybe they're just along for the ride. "God" is just a title in a lot of cases, isn't it? Something bestowed by other people, who don't necessarily know what they're dealing with.

[He prods at the fire a little, expression briefly distant.]

Honestly? That tracks. For all we know, gods aren't even sentient. They could just be a huge source of power or something, and we give them names to understand them better.

[He is absolutely testing Wei Wuxian there, to see just how much the other Chuuya told him about their 'situation'.]

[His expression is hard to read, but he hums a soft little note that lingers, flicking another piece of paper into the fire.]

Could be. ...Sounds like a lonely way to exist, though. I'd rather experience life as one lowly, silly human than an all-powerful being that can't even enjoy a good red wine.

[Chuuya is quiet for a bit after that, watching the small fire eat up the paper Wei Wuxian tosses in. So many questions swirl around in his head, and he can't decide on any to actually ask. Even with two weeks to think on it, he still doesn't know how to even form the question, much less prepare himself for the answer.

Though with how Wei Wuxian said that last bit, it meant he had a choice in the matter, right?]

It's better than being an unthinking force of chaos, isn't it? Anybody'd be selfish, if those were their two choices.

[There's something vulnerable in the way he says those words, too. Something he'd deny if asked about it later, but in the moment it's easy to let it slip out.]

[There's a little huff; it's probably something of a laugh, dry in its amusement.]

I don't think it's selfish, really. [But he says it with a sloping shrug, because he's also probably not very qualified to talk about what is or isn't selfish.]

It's sometimes a good thing, in any case - having choices and being able to pick with your own two hands. Even if you have to live with that choice after, at least you can live with it knowing it was yours, you know?

It'd be nice, yeah. To have that choice.

He must have had that choice, huh?

[And if the older Chuuya was able to choose how to live, then that means this Chuuya doesn't have to worry as much about someday losing himself entirely. Which has been weighing heavily on his mind ever since murder mansion.]

[His head tilts to the side a little as he considers the answer to that question. Chuuya's... sure chosen something, hm. A ferocious dedication to the mafia could end up destroying him, and he seemed pretty Resigned To Eventual Death, but...

Hm.

...He smiles, folding another scrap of paper up.]

He does seem to covet his ability to do what he wants when he wants, at the very least.

Yeah. If he's me, then I can see exactly why he would care about that so much.

[Because he cares about it too.

But Chuuya leaves it at that for now, and he starts drawing another bit of money to burn.]

You gonna do this every week? Because if you are, I might have to come help you.

[There's a tiny little laugh at that. This Chuuya is certainly different from the one he'd known, but there are enough similarities that it's - funny, at times. Interesting, and a bit of a comfort, maybe.]

Mm, I think I will. Unfortunately, we'll have new people to honor every week. It'd be unfair to only burn money for these four, mm?

Then we'll have to burn for six, or however many there end up being.

[And then the mailbox in the arts and crafts cabin shows up and they're all freed from burning origami hearts but WEI WUXIAN WILL KEEP THE TRADITION GOING.]
