Rise and shine, everyone! At 7:00 AM on the dot, those who are asleep will be roused from their slumber by the sound of a bugle call. It seems that breakfast is now served in the Mess Hall. How nice! It's up to you to decide if you want to continue sleeping or not... But maybe it's a good idea to grab a bite and explore your surroundings. After all, it seems the fog has receded enough to reveal a few new locations.

Regardless of what you do, be sure to check the weather before stepping outside. You never know when you might need an umbrella! Once you're up and at them, though, there are a few points of interest this week.

If you swing by the Director's Office, you will find Purple Heart manning the receptionist's desk or flitting in and out of the rooms down the hallway. This week's tasks are now available, and you can check them out on the announcement board in the waiting room. Should you visit the Camp Shop, Winter Wizard will be handling all transactions at the checkout counter. Even camp directors hold down normal jobs, you know. Strangely enough, Black Shadows doesn't seem to be stationed at any set location. Maybe it's their week off? Oh, well. Seems like if you want to get ahold of them, you'll have to pay your respects to the bunnies.

As you explore the camp, however... You may find yourself confronted by scenes from a not so distant past. Or, perhaps, the so-called-movies playing on the big screen are completely foreign to you. But that's not all you will have to deal with this week. Continue skimming the edges of the forest, and you will find yourself going down memory lane. Literally.

To further complicate matter, at the start of this week everyone will wake up with a tattoo of a star on the back of their hands. Though you will be unaware of its purpose at first, it will quickly become apparent the moment you say the words "I wish" out loud. It's a wish granting star! Or, well, sort of. Regardless of what you wish for, the result of the wish is always material, small, and never actually useful for what the character actually desires. They cannot cause effects or change anything, nor will it result in a weapon or items that can be used to solve a murder. For example, wishing for an exit will result in an Emergency Exit sign materializing in your hands.

You will all get three wishes each. The star will become fainter with each wish, until disappearing once they make their third wish. All items gained through this effect will disappear once Week 2 officially begins. Good luck.

Hello, Yin Yu-san. As long as we can exchange something to teach and learn, I would enjoy becoming better at.... [ She glances over what he has in front of him. ] Calligraphy.
shixiong: give them no reason to stare (5)

this time we wont be cucked by captcha

Lady Shinobu. [ with a polite bow of his head, in greeting, he offers her a small smile. ] It would be my honor. Please.

[ he gestures at the seat across from him, and passes one of the paper sheets along, too! ]

[ She takes the sheet and the direction to sit. ]

This is something my sister would've been better at, but I think I'll be quick student.
shixiong: the ramblings of a lunatic? (54)

[personal profile] shixiong 2020-06-17 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[ shinobu is familiar enough that the conversation flows easier. ]

I see... [ a sister... well, you dont learn much about people when you only know them for a couple of weeks, no matter what kind of chaos you go through.

yin yu lifts the brush, picking up the ink, as he considers what to help her paint! ]
...One of the main aspects of calligraphy and painting is to use the strokes to show your own vitality, as well as the ability to be attuned to the harmonies of the world. When done properly, it can express a lot about the person who practices it, because it's a simple seeming art, but has as many variations as you can possibly imagine. If it's an art to help you feel close to someone, then, that is a good reason to learn it.

[ this is like the most words he's spoken in a while good job shinobu ] Would you typically use a brush to write your name?
wisterin: (005)

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-06-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Shinobu will freely talk about her family, if anyone asks.

She nods. The theory makes sense enough even if she's not sure how a brush stroke can show vitality?

me, squinting at japanese history: ]

I usually use a pen, but it's not like I've never written with a brush before.
shixiong: become like pulling teeth (63)

[personal profile] shixiong 2020-06-17 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[ the amount of squinting i had to do to write that last tag, dw ]

Would you show me the characters, then? If you wouldn't mind.

[personal profile] wisterin 2020-06-18 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Of course.

[ She writes: 胡蝶 しのぶ

Sorry about that hiragana, Yin Yu. Her strokes are pretty elegant and precise, though. ]

[ THE AMOUNT, OF RESEARCH,

ah! well, the second part is lost on him, but he leans over to properly look at the characters. ]

Hú...dié. [ a little smile, a bit wan. ] It's not exactly the same, but... this is [ a tap to the second character ] 'butterfly', in my home. [ at least, in his home language. he's intimately familiar with hua chengzhu's, the silver wraith butterflies that terrify every member of the heavens. such a symbol of rebirth does not always mean fragility, now does it.. ]

[ mm. but. his attention returns to the characters... ] Lady Shinobu's handwriting is very precise; it suggests a strong moral character, as well as an attention to detail. Concise, and decisive in your use of the ink itself... It's suiting, for what I know of you.

May I? [ when the brush is returned to him, he copies the characters for shinobu's last name on his own paper. yin yu's handwriting is uniform, the calligraphic characters neat, with a medium amount of ink, a medium amount of pressure, and they move down the page like a typewriter. his posture is tall, for once, the brush gripped deftly in his hands, no extra decorations or anything added. as he writes, he speaks.] Every character in calligraphy is about connection, and has to be placed thoughtfully, with relation to the one before it. A sentence should flow; it's an art that requires focus, and often, a lot of repetition to perfect.

[ after a moment, he takes the brush and paints his own name beside where he'd written hers: "引玉". a very simple name, but none the less; the straight lines are straight, the stroke order correct, the characters neat, harmonious. yin yu offers the brush forward, again, and the ink pot as well. ] Try this one.

[ YOUR DEDICATION SISI I'M IN AWE

She does as instructed. She's used to her name, so there's just a touch of uncertainty in writing his name. She knows the characters, but a name is important, and as per the lesson, she has to be thoughtful about the connection.

At least her focus has always been good. ]

Your strokes are even more precise than mine. [ She smiles as if to say, what does that mean? ]

My family name means butterfly in my language as well.

[ Please see her butterfly hair ornament, her butterfly haori, and the the butterfly pattern on her obi. ]

What does your name mean in your home?
shixiong: i'm setting pen to paper again (42)

[personal profile] shixiong 2020-06-18 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
[ i need you to know i just learned the saddest thing in doing this research so like, thank you

her form isn't too bad, and he watches her write with the careful gaze of a teacher, nodding. it's a bit too unsure; this wouldn't have passed muster. ]
Try again, now that it's familiar. Your lines are a little out of place, though not much, here, and here. [ pointing to said spots!!

ah, to her question, he gives her a small smile, and a bow of his head, humble. ]
It's only from much practice, Lady Shinobu. Mastering calligraphy was required of me from a young age. For my own strokes... [ mm, glancing back to his name. ] 'Orderly', if nothing. A bit unremarkable. [ haha. well! it suits him. ] I often transcribe things for my master, so it is best that they're as visually simple and readable as possible.

[ hua cheng, canonically, cannot write for shit.

anyway! yin yu gestures to the characters of his own name, as requested. ]
The 'yu' is the character for jade; it's fairly common. Overall, it's part of an idiom..."Attract jade by laying bricks."

[ in other words: "what one is offering is somehow lacking, and one is in hopes that others will, seeing it, offer something that is better." this is so upsetting i just learned this today and now im sad for lore reasons. ]

I would not call you unremarkable.

[ She says that without missing a beat. ]

And I would consider you both parts of that idiom.

[ Enough Chinese culture crosses over that she can reasonably know this. I am not googling to double check. Yin Yu deserves to be punched in the self-esteem.

Correcting her calligraphy mistakes can wait a minute. ]

You seem fastidious enough that what you lay down will become something as prized as jade.
shixiong: did i even make a sound? (39)

[personal profile] shixiong 2020-06-20 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[ stop this!

yin yu ducks his head, humble as ever. he's a little embarrassed--the tips of his ears are red, clearly visible. ]
That is very kind of you to say, Lady Shinobu. Thank you.

[ too bad the lore makes it 100% not true. he's the brick in pretty much every situation and real life has done nothing but prove it. there's no sense in fighting it out loud, so he will defer to her opinion. ] I do the best I can.
